I probably should have taken advantage of my break to write a diary or two, but ya know, other things got in the way! That said, I thought I'd squeeze in a few before things start up next week, and the first is to pass on a request from a friend:

From Facebook,in Hebrew (thanks to Ofer). Pollak is serving three months in prison for riding a bicycle during a 2008 demonstration against the Gaza onslaught. Apparently he is sharing a cell with men convicted in this sensational 1983 murder case, and he sought to bring 10 books to prison and was allowed to bring only four.

Instead of doing my reading for class tomorrow, I decided to do a quick diary about a recent event here in the bay area, one so thuggish and despicable I feel we all here at Dkos should be aware of it;

Last night, up to a dozen members of San Francisco Voice for Israel/StandWithUs, a right-wing Israeli advocacy group with a documented track record of aggressively taunting and intimidating grassroots peace activists, attended a Bay Area Jewish Voice for Peace community meeting at a South Berkeley Senior Center with the intention of disrupting, intimidating and possibly assaulting Jewish Voice for Peace members. Jewish Voice for Peace is the largest U.S. Jewish peace group dedicated to a resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict based on democracy and full equality --- the Bay Area chapter is the founding chapter of the organization. What to say, these days, it is just becoming uglier and uglier. Just a bit back, Gideon Levy had this to say;

So, we have been lead to believe that the Irene, filled with Jewish and Israeli activists intent on breaking the siege of Gaza, was stopped and towed to Israel without the use of excesive force, right?

I started writing this the night of the 15th. I'm at my friend Joan's house after a long day of work, errands, a cold that just refuses to go away. She is in the ICU right now, after two rounds of chemo, battling pneumonia. Her two daughters are asleep, although the youngest is stirring from time to time. And just now, her four year old has walked out in a half-asleep state, causing her father to bring her back to her room. I'm looking at the clock, which tells me I should pack it in and get some rest. But, tomorrow is an important day, and I must make note of it.

I'd like to first say thank you to everyone here. Recently I wrote a diary on some statements by Ehud Barak, as well as other issues related to Palestine and the struggle of the Palestinians for freedom. However, I began the diary by relating to you all of the struggle of a friend of mine, one which has got me in one of the saddest and in many ways wonderful moments of my life. If you'd all not mind, I need to talk about this some more.

Hello, everyone. I begin writing this diary after a few very hectic days. A good friend of mine, mother of two wonderful children, has been hospitalized this week, and it looks like she has some form of cancer. I have been staying at her place, helping her husband with many things, mostly the children, both of whom have a nasty chest cold that has been making the rounds lately. I hope for the best, but honestly, I am very worried for my friend and her family.

But before I crash tonight, I need to unwind and get my mind onto something else, so here it goes...

There have been many books that have influenced my understanding of Israel/Palestine, and one that proved to be an important milestone was Fateful Triangle: The United States, Israel, and the Palestinians, by Noam Chomsky. I remember when I was young, seeing the book in the house, but it wasn't until many years later that I began to read it for myself, and its contents shocked me, leading me to many other books, experiences and changes in my outlook and understanding.

I mention it now, because it seems that the paradigm has been changed since the late 70's-early 80's. What was once a triangle has now become more of a rectangle, with Egypt taking a more and more prominent role in the Palestinian struggle; or, I should say, in the suppression of said struggle...
